Decoding the Boxes on Form 1098-E

  • Box 1 (Student Loan Interest Received by Lender): Displays total deductible interest received, including regular scheduled interest, voluntary interest prepayments, and qualifying capitalized interest.
  • Box 2 (Check If Box 1 Does Not Include Loan Origination Fees): Historically indicated whether fees or capitalized interest prior to September 2004 were included in the total.

IRS Statutory Phaseouts (Schedule 1, Line 21)

Under Section 221 of the Internal Revenue Code, the maximum deduction is capped at $2,500. If your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) falls within the phaseout range, your deduction is reduced proportionally:

Filing Status Full $2,500 Deduction Proportional Phaseout Zero Deduction ($0)
Single / Head of Household MAGI ≤ $80,000 $80,000 – $95,000 MAGI ≥ $95,000
Married Filing Jointly MAGI ≤ $165,000 $165,000 – $195,000 MAGI ≥ $195,000
Married Filing Separately Ineligible ($0) Ineligible ($0) Statutorily Barred
